The Fox by the Pool

Maya gripped her iphone until her knuckles turned white. The Taylor's party raged behind her—music thumping, laughter echoing, the perfect Instagram moment waiting to happen. But she couldn't make her feet move.

"You coming in or what?" Jordan called from the pool, flipping wet hair that caught sunlight like spun gold.

The orange bikini Maya's mom had bought her felt too bright, too everything. Like a neon sign announcing: TRY HARD.

She scrolled through her feed instead. Everyone looked effortless. Perfect. Not like her heart hammering against her ribs, not like the pressure building behind her eyes.

A rustle in the bushes made her jump.

A fox—actual literal fox—with the brightest copper coat she'd ever seen, sat watching her. Head tilted, ears perked, totally unbothered by the teenage chaos nearby.

Maya froze. The fox blinked slow, like it knew something she didn't.

Then it trotted past, tail streaming, and she could've sworn—she swore it looked back like: you good, bro?

Something cracked open in her chest.

She ditched her iphone on a lounge chair. Stripped off the cover-up that had felt like armor.

The pool water shocked her skin cold. "Hey!" Jordan yelled. "Finally!"

Someone shoved an orange soda into her hand. Ice clinked, condensation slick against her palm. "You okay? You looked like you were gonna bolt."

Maya laughed, really laughed. "Yeah. I think I just needed to... I don't know. Stop overthinking everything."

"That fox been hanging out here all summer," Jordan said, floating backward. "We call him Rusty. He's chill."

The fox watched from the edge of the yard, glowing like ember against the deepening twilight. Maya's orange bikini didn't feel like a neon sign anymore. It felt like armor, but the good kind—the kind that said: I'm here, I'm real, deal with it.

Later, she'd scroll through her feed and see the candid Jordan took: Maya mid-laugh, hair plastered to her face, making a face that wasn't pretty-cute but real-hilarious. She'd post it with the caption: "fox energy only 🦊"

For the first time all summer, her thumb didn't hover over the delete button.
