The Fox Behind Home Plate

Leo stood behind the backstop, feeling like a total fake. Everyone thought he was this baseball prodigy because of that one lucky hit in eighth grade, but honestly? He'd rather be anywhere else. He was basically a spy in his own life, watching the jocks live their best lives while he mentally rehearsed lines for the drama club audition he hadn't told anyone about.

His crush, Maya, was sitting in the bleachers. Leo had been spying on her Instagram stories all week—lowkey stalking, not creepy, he hoped—and now here she was, watching him pretend to be an athlete.

"Nice form, Leo!" she called out. He waved, trying to look chill while silently panicking.

Then disaster struck. His mom had packed his lunch with that spinach salad she'd been obsessing over, and apparently some leafy green treason had taken up residence in his front teeth. Leo caught his reflection in his phone screen during a timeout and literally wanted to die.

The universe wasn't done yet. A fox—actual wildlife, not metaphorical—darted onto the field, causing total chaos. Everyone freaked out. Leo saw his chance. He sprinted toward the dugout, spinach and all, to escape the impending embarrassment.

But Maya was there, laughing so hard she was crying.

"You have something in your teeth," she managed, wiping actual tears of mirth from her eyes. "It's actually kind of perfect."

Leo groaned. "This is the worst moment of my life."

"Hardly." She grinned. "You know what else nobody notices about you? That you're always watching everything like you're gathering material. I see you in drama club rehearsals sometimes, Leo. You're good."

He felt like he'd jumped into freezing water—the shock of being seen, the way it both terrified and exhilarated him.

"Wait, you knew?"

"I'm not the one who's been spying." She winked. "So, you gonna invite me to the play, or what?"

The fox on the field was long gone, but Leo felt like something wild and uncertain was just beginning.
