The Fox at the Top of the Pyramid

Maya's thumb hovered over her iPhone screen, the blue light painting her face in the dark of her bedroom. Another Snapchat from the Padel group chat. She'd been invited to play with the popular kids, a ladder climb she'd been working toward since freshman year.

The social pyramid at Ridgeview High was real—everyone knew their tier. Maya hovered somewhere in the middle, solid but invisible. Until sophomore year when she'd discovered padel, the one sport where her quick reflexes made her shine.

"You coming?" the message read. "J's bringing his new racket."

J. Jason. The guy whose name alone made girls' voices go up an octave. The same Jason who'd cornered her by the lockers last week, his breath smelling like cinnamon gum and cruelty.

"Nice serve, loser," he'd said, loud enough for his friends to hear. "For a girl."

Maya had smiled then, a genuine I-know-something-you-don't smile. She was smart as a fox, her grandmother said, and she'd noticed how Jason's forehand fell apart when he was frustrated. How he double-faulted when someone watched too closely.

Saturday arrived under a sky so blue it hurt. The padel courts hummed with conversation, balls popping against racket strings like popcorn. Maya stepped onto the blue concrete, her worn racket feeling like an extension of her arm.

Jason waited near the net, surrounded by his tier-one friends. The pyramid of popularity literally and figuratively surrounding him.

"Ready to get smoked, Maya?" He smirked, spinning a ball on his racket.

She didn't answer. Instead, she served—low, fast, impossible. The ball kissed the line before Jason could react.

The game unfolded like a chess match. Every time Jason tried to intimidate her with aggressive shots, she answered with something softer, smarter. By match point, the entire court had gone silent. When her final lob dropped just inside the baseline, nobody breathed.

Jason's face burned. He stalked off without a word.

Maya's iPhone buzzed in her bag. When she checked later, her stomach flipped. Someone had posted a video of her winning shot. Comments flooded in:

*who IS she*

*since when does Maya play like that*

*j got absolutely cooked*

She sat on the bench, heart hammering, and realized something that made her smile: the pyramid was just a shape. It could be climbed, or—she tilted her head thinking—it could be knocked over.

"Hey," said a freshman girl, shyly approaching. "Can you teach me that serve?"

Maya grinned. "Absolutely."
