The Fox at the Pool's Edge

5 AM practices turned me into a certified zombie. I'd roll out of bed, eyes crusted shut, brain foggy enough that I once put my phone in the fridge. But swim team was my thing — or at least, it was supposed to be.

The team pyramid was brutal. At the top? Jessica, with her Olympic dreams and perfect streamline. At the bottom? Freshmen like me, fighting just not to get cut. Every lap felt like swimming upstream while everyone else flowed downstream.

"You're off your start again," Coach barked one Tuesday, clipboard raised like a weapon. "Fix it or warm the bench."

I stayed late that night, practicing my starts until my arms shook. That's when I saw it — a fox, copper-bright and impossibly still, watching from the fence line. Not moving. Just watching, like it knew something I didn't.

"You're still here?"

Ben. The quiet sophomore who somehow always placed third at meets, never bragging, just... there.

"Coach says I need to fix my start or I'm done."

Ben sat on the pool edge, dangling his feet. "You know why I never move up the pyramid?"

I shook my head, water dripping from my hair.

"Because I stopped caring about climbing it." He pulled a vitamin bottle from his bag. "My mom makes me take these. Says they'll help with energy." He snorted. "But the real energy comes from actually liking what you do."

The fox was still there, ears twitching. Wild. Unconcerned with pyramids or performance metrics.

"I'm not even sure I like swimming," I admitted, the words tasting like betrayal.

"Then stop doing it for them." Ben stood up. "Do it for you, or find something else. Life's too short to be someone else's zombie."

The fox slipped away into the darkness, silent as a secret.

Next morning, I showed up at 5 AM. But this time, when Coach yelled about starts, I didn't flinch. I swam. Not for Jessica, not for the pyramid, not for my parents who paid the fees. For me.

And somewhere beyond the fence, I swear a fox was watching, like it knew all along.
