The Fox at the Pool Party

The **water** in the Hendersons' pool sparkled like diamonds under the string lights, but Maya's stomach was doing backflips. This was IT — the first party of sophomore year, and she was finally invited.

She adjusted her dad's old fedora **hat**, hoping it made her look artsy and mysterious instead of like she was playing dress-up. Her plan: glide in, charm everyone with her new vibe, maybe talk to Jason from third period.

Reality: she spent twenty minutes hiding near the snack table, watching everyone else look effortless.

Then she saw him — Eric, the human equivalent of a **bull** in a china shop, currently dunking some poor freshman's phone into a cup. Maya's hands curled into fists. Freshman year, Eric had made her life miserable with "innocent" pranks that everyone laughed at EXCEPT her.

"Hey, Maya," he said, spotting her. "Nice hat. Going to a magic show?" His friends snorted.

Something clicked. Maya was done being the punchline.

"Actually," she said, her voice steadier than she felt, "I'm channeling my inner magician. Watch this." She grabbed the aux **cable** from the DJ setup and held it up like a weapon. "One song, and if anyone hates it, I'm gone. If they love it, YOU have to wear this hat."

Eric smirked. "You're on."

Maya queued up the song — something underground she'd discovered on Spotify, nothing mainstream. As the bass dropped, heads started turning. People were MOVING. Jason from third period actually smiled at her.

By the chorus, even Eric's friends were nodding. The song ended to actual cheers.

Eric stared at her, then at the fedora she held out. A grin spread across his face. "Alright, **fox**, you win." He put on the hat, tilting it sideways. "But next time, I'm picking the music."

Maya laughed, actually laughed, and for the first time in forever, she didn't feel like she was performing. She was just... herself. And apparently, herself was pretty okay.
