The Fox at the Pool

Maya smoothed her sunscreen-slicked hands down her lifeguard tank for the third time. The community pool smelled like chlorine and coconut, and her shift had exactly forty-three minutes left. That's when Fox walked in.

Okay, his name was actually Leo, but everyone called him Fox because of his copper hair and how he could talk his way out of detention like it was an art form. He was two grades ahead, and Maya had been lowkey spying on his Spotify playlists for months. His taste was devastatingly good.

'Hey lifeguard,' Fox said, sliding onto the empty chair next to her stand. 'What's the vibe today?'

Maya's stomach did that thing where it felt like it was trying to escape through her throat. 'Chill. Too chill. I'm literally dying of boredom.' She mentally face-palmed. Literally? Really?

Fox laughed, and it was worse than she imagined—warm and genuine and unfairly attractive. 'Wanna make it less chill? Some of us are hitting the old pyramid building after sunset. You should come.'

The pyramid. The abandoned concrete structure in the woods where everyone went to drink cheap beer and make questionable life choices. Maya had been invited exactly zero times. Until now.

'Sure,' she said, trying to sound casual instead of like she was screaming internally. 'But I gotta warn you—my mom's in this intense health phase. She packed me spinach wraps for dinner. I'll be the girl eating literal leaves at a party.'

'Spinach wraps?' Fox grinned. 'Based. My mom thinks pizza is a vegetable.'

The sun sank behind the pool house, painting everything pink and gold. Maya thought about the social pyramid at school—how she'd been stuck at the bottom since moving here, how one invitation could shift everything. But mostly she thought about how Fox had sat next to her specifically. How he'd laughed at her joke.

'You coming?' he asked, standing up.

'Yeah.' Maya's voice didn't shake. 'Just let me finish my shift.'

Fox smirked. 'Cool. Don't forget your spinach, lifeguard.'

Maya watched him walk away, heart hammering against her ribs. Some days, she thought, you didn't have to climb to the top of the pyramid. Sometimes you just had to get invited inside.
