The Fox at the Palm

Kayla's palms were sweating—like, actually dripping—before she even stepped through the door. Her first house party. The one everyone would be talking about on Monday.

"You good?" Maya asked, already halfway through her third lip gloss application.

"Yeah. Totally. Just... palms acting weird." Kayla wiped her hands on her dress, leaving tiny dark spots. Great.

Inside, the bass hit her chest like a physical thing. People everywhere. And there he was—Alex, leaning against the sliding door to the backyard, looking like he knew exactly how cool he was. The fox. Everyone called him that behind his back, sly and unreadable and impossible to catch.

Kayla's heart did something embarrassing and fluttery. She'd had a crush on him since October, when he'd let her borrow his pen in chem and smiled like he actually meant it.

"Go talk to him," Maya shoved her shoulder. "What's the worst that happens?"

Kayla walked over, legs feeling like they belonged to someone else. Every step closer felt like running a marathon without moving.

"Hey," she said. It came out weirdly squeaky.

Alex looked up, and—oh no, his eyes were the exact brown she'd imagined. "Hey. You're Kayla, right? Chemistry?"

He knew her name. HE KNEW HER NAME.

"Yeah! That's me. Chem's... yeah."

Cool. Very cool. She was killing this.

Then it happened—a tiny dog came bolting through the party, yapping its head off. Someone's golden retriever puppy, loose and chaos-energy incarnate. It jumped on Kayla, claws scratching, tongue going for her face like she was made of treats.

She stumbled backward. Caught Alex's red cup. It spilled everywhere—down his shirt, his jeans, the expensive sneakers she'd noticed earlier.

The music stopped. Actually stopped. People were staring. Alex was dripping.

"Oh my god, I'm so—" She was already backing away, eyes stinging, humiliation burning through her chest. She turned and ran. Actually ran. Out the front door, down the street, not caring that her heels were killing her or that Maya was calling after her.

She made it two blocks before stopping, lungs burning, palms still somehow sweating. Her phone buzzed.

Maya: WHERE DID U GO

Maya: ALEX WAS LAUGHING???

Kayla stared at the screen until her vision blurred. She'd ruined everything. The fox got away. She was the girl who spilled a drink on the hottest guy at the party.

Her phone buzzed again. Unknown number.

Unknown: This is Alex lol. You left your phone charger behind. Also, that was the funniest thing that's happened all night. My shirt needed washing anyway.

Unknown: Want to come back? I promise to keep the dog away from you.

Kayla stood under the streetlamp, palms suddenly not sweating at all, and smiled.
