The Fox at the End of the Rope

Marcus stood on the balcony of the Fort Lauderdale Marriott, nursing his fourth scotch and feeling like the walking dead. Three days of leadership seminars and trust falls had turned him into something else entirely—a corporate **zombie**, hollowed out by buzzwords and the performative camaraderie of strangers who'd stab him for a promotion. His father's fedora, perched on his head like a crown of thorns, was the only real thing left.

Below him, the **palm** trees swayed in the Gulf breeze, their fronds silhouetted against the artificial gold of the resort lights. He'd come here to save his career, but something in him had already resigned.

Then he saw it—a **fox**, red as a fresh wound, moving through the manicured gardens with the deliberate grace of something that didn't belong. It stopped beneath a fallen **cable**, black and thick as a snake, casting it into shadow. The fox looked up, eyes catching the balcony light, and Marcus felt seen in a way he hadn't been in years.

The contrast hit him hard: this creature, wild and alive, moving through a world that had never invited it. Like him. Like all of them, really—predators pretending to be prey, survivors dressed in corporate casual.

He took off the **hat**, his father's hat, and held it against his chest. In the morning, he'd resign. In the morning, he'd be something other than dead.

The fox vanished into the darkness, and Marcus finished his drink, finally ready to begin.
