The Fox at the Bottom of the Pyramid

Maya sat in the last row of the baseball bleachers, phone clutched in her hand like a guilty secret. Below, the varsity team warmed up — golden boys at the top of the sophomore pyramid, while she hovered somewhere near the bottom, invisible as air.

"You're gonna stare all practice or actually say hi?"

Maya jumped. Chloe slid onto the bench beside her, ripping open a bag of chips with aggressive precision. Chloe had somehow transcended pyramid tiers entirely by refusing to acknowledge they existed. Maya admired that about her.

"I'm not staring," Maya lied. "I'm conducting an observational study."

"You're a literal spy." Chloe snorted. "Just DM him already."

"No. Absolutely not."

Because here's the thing about crushing on Lucas Chen: everyone crushed on Lucas Chen. Maya's older sister had crushed on Lucas Chen. Probably Lucas's grandmother crushed on Lucas Chen. He was that perfect. And Maya was just... background texture.

A rustle in the overgrown weeds beyond the outfield fence caught her eye. A fox — sleek rusty red, impossibly bright against the dull brown of dead grass — trotted into view, carrying something in its mouth. It paused, ears swiveling toward the field.

"Whoa," Maya breathed.

"Is that a fox?" Chloe leaned forward. "Since when do we have foxes?"

The fox dropped its prize — a dirty baseball, probably hit over the fence last season — and batted it with both paws. Then it grabbed the ball again and pranced away like it had just won the World Series.

Maya started laughing. She couldn't help it.

"What?" Chloe asked.

"It stole their baseball." Maya wiped her eyes. "That fox just rolled onto the varsity field, stole their equipment, and left. No regrets. No apologies. It didn't care about the pyramid. It just saw something it wanted and took it."

Chloe was already grinning. "Are you about to metaphor this situation into courage?"

"Maybe." Maya stood up, heart hammering. "Or maybe I'm just going to be the fox."

Lucas had stopped warming up. He was scanning the bleachers, looking for someone. He raised a hand in a small wave.

Maya didn't sit back down. She didn't overthink it. She just waved back.

"Alright," Chloe said, impressed. "Fox behavior activated."

Maya's phone buzzed. An Instagram notification: lucas.chen started following you.

"Yeah," Maya said, grinning so hard her face hurt. "Something like that."
