The Fox at the Bottom of the Pyramid
Maya'svitamin gummies rattled in her pocket as she slid into the back of the cafeteria. Another day at the bottom of the school pyramid—freshmen year was basically designed to remind you that you were nothing.
"Hey, Vitamin Girl," Brent called from the popular table. He'd dubbed her that after he'd seen her taking her daily supplements during gym class. The nickname had stuck, unfortunately.
Maya ignored him, like always. She had bigger problems than Brent's mediocre bullying. Like the fox.
Three weeks ago, she'd discovered it behind the abandoned gym shed—a scrawny, terrified thing with a mangled leg. She'd been sneaking it food ever since, building a tiny trust with scraps from her lunch and patience she didn't know she had.
"You okay?" asked Kai, sliding into the seat across from her. Kai was new, quiet, and sat with her yesterday and somehow never left.
"Fine," Maya said, though her hands shook. "Brent's just being loud again."
"He's literally at the top of the pyramid screaming for attention," Kai said, deadpan. "Must be exhausting up there."
Maya snorted, surprised. Kai had a way of making things feel less heavy.
That afternoon, she ducked behind the gym shed, tupperware of chicken in hand. But the fox was gone.
Her stomach dropped. She searched everywhere—behind the dumpster, near the tennis courts, around the back of the bleachers. Nothing.
"Looking for this?"
She spun around. Brent stood there, holding a phone. On the screen: a video of her feeding the fox.
"Everyone's gonna see this," he grinned. "Freak girl and her wild pet."
Something in Maya snapped. Months of being at the bottom of every pyramid—social, academic, whatever—rose up in her chest.
"Post it," she said, stepping closer. "See if I care. At least I'm not climbing over people to feel tall."
Brent blinked. The grin faltered.
"And that fox?" Maya continued, voice steady. "She's survived hurt, hungry, and alone. She's braver than you'll ever be."
She grabbed her phone, texted Kai: *you still at school?*
*yeah why?*
*got a story for you. also, bring a camera.*
Behind the shed, in the shadows where she'd first found her, the fox stirred—weak, but alive. Maya's hands shook as she knelt, but this time, she wasn't afraid.
The pyramid was crumbling anyway. She'd build something better from the pieces.
