The Fox at Sunset Courts
Maya's iPhone buzzed with another Instagram notification—Tiffany and Chloe posting stories from the padel courts without her. Again. Three weeks of group chat silence since the incident at Emma's party, and her former best friends had officially moved on.
She'd taken up playing padel alone at the old courts near the woods, practicing her backhand against the wall until dusk. That's where she saw it—a sleek red fox darting between the tennis fence, watching her with intelligent amber eyes.
The fox became her ritual. Every afternoon at five, Maya would grab her racquet and the fox would appear, sitting gracefully on the hillside like a silent coach. She started talking to it, pouring out frustrations about high school drama that felt too embarrassing to admit to anyone else.
'You don't care that I'm not cool enough for the popular table anymore, do you?' she asked one afternoon, missing another serve. The fox tilted its head, almost understanding.
Then came the day Tiffany and Chloe showed up at the courts, wanting to practice for tryouts. Maya's stomach dropped—until she saw the fox watching from the same spot, calm and unbothered.
Something clicked. The fox didn't need their approval either.
'Want to join?' Maya called out, surprised at her own confidence. 'I was just finishing up.'
They played until sunset, laughing at old inside jokes like nothing had changed. As Maya gathered her gear, she caught the fox's gaze one last time before it disappeared into the trees.
Her phone buzzed—Tiffany had added her to the group chat again. But this time, Maya didn't need the validation. The fox had taught her that sometimes, the strongest friendships begin with being your own best friend first.
