The Fox at Sunrise

Emma stood on the balcony of her corporate apartment, watching the bull of a man below—Marcus, her boss—arguing with someone on his phone while pacing the hotel courtyard. She'd come here for the leadership retreat, but she'd spent three days taking vitamin D supplements to compensate for the fluorescent lighting and windowless conference rooms.

"You're thirty-four, Emma," her mother's voice echoed in memory. "Your biological clock isn't just ticking—it's screaming." Her sister had sent her orange-colored fertility pills, expensive vitamins that promised to "optimize" everything. Emma had flushed them down the toilet.

The courtyard fountain's water cascaded in artificial rhythms. Emma had met someone here—a woman named Fox, with sharp eyes and sharper tongue. They'd spent one night together, tangled in hotel sheets, before Fox announced she was returning to her husband in Chicago. "I'm what you needed," she'd whispered, "not what you want."

Now Emma held the miniature bottle of orange juice from the breakfast cart, squeezing it until her knuckles turned white. The bull below had stopped pacing. He looked up, saw her, and waved.

"Emma! There you are!" Marcus called. "Leadership seminar starts in fifteen."

She thought about Fox's laugh, how she'd traced the freckles on Emma's shoulder and said, "You're not afraid of failure, darling. You're afraid of wanting something you can't control."

The water in the fountain caught the morning light. Emma realized she'd been waiting her whole life for permission to want things. Permission to be selfish, to be loud, to be the fox instead of the henhouse.

"Marcus," she called down, surprising herself. "I'm not coming to the seminar."

"What? Emma, this is crucial for your—"

"I'm going home," she said. "And then I'm going to figure out what I actually want." She set down the orange juice and went inside to pack. For the first time in years, she wasn't hungry. She wasn't anything at all, and it felt like freedom.
