The Fox at Midnight
Pool parties at Jake's house were legendary, mostly because nobody actually swam. It was all about who looked best in their swimwear, who was dating who, and who could hold their breath the longest—metaphorically speaking.
I stood by the deep end, nursing a warm soda, trying to look like I wasn't terrified of the water. Freshman year, no coordination, and a lifetime of avoiding public swimming had led to this moment: social suicide by poolside.
"Yo Marcus, you gonna swim or what?" Jake called out, doing a cannonball that sent water spraying everywhere. His friends laughed like it was the funniest thing ever.
"Nah, I'm good," I said, trying to sound chill instead of terrified.
That's when I saw it—a flash of russet fur near the backyard fence. A fox. Not some metaphorical nickname or whatever, but an actual, literal fox, padding through the manicured lawn like it owned the place.
Nobody else noticed. Too busy being cool.
The fox stopped near the pool's edge, its amber eyes locking with mine. Then it did something completely insane—it started drinking from the pool, lapping up chlorinated water like it was the finest spring.
"Dude, is that a fox?" I whispered to nobody.
The fox finished, shook its coat, and looked at me again. And I swear it communicated something: *You're not the only one who doesn't belong here. And that's okay.*
Then it bolted, vanishing as quickly as it appeared.
But that split second changed everything. The fox didn't care about being cool or fitting in. It just wanted a drink.
So I jumped in.
Not gracefully. Not like Jake's cannonball. More like a panicked flopping descent. But I surfaced, spluttering and wiping chlorine from my eyes, and everyone was staring.
"Finally!" someone yelled, and then they were all swimming, really swimming, no longer performing for each other.
Later, drying off on the patio, I realized something: the fox had showed me that sometimes you just have to dive in, even when you're terrified. And the water's not actually that deep once you stop overthinking it.
Best night of freshman year. And I still don't know if anyone else saw that fox, but honestly? It doesn't matter.
