The Fox at Midnight

Maya's iPhone buzzed against her nightstand at 11:47 PM, the blue light illuminating her dark room like a tiny, demanding sun. Another notification. Another like on a post she'd spent twenty minutes curating to look effortless.

"You need these vitamins, Maya," her mom had said that morning, sliding a fluorescent orange bottle across the kitchen counter. "They'll help with focus. With everything."

Maya had taken them, because that's what you did when you were fifteen and everything felt like a problem that needed solving.

Now, staring at her screen — 472 followers, 238 posts, endless comparison — she slipped out her window. The California air hit her face, cool and real. She sat on her roof, legs dangling over the edge, and that's when she saw it.

A fox.

Not on a screen, not in a perfectly filtered photo. A real fox, its coat burning gold even in the moonlight, standing on the fence below like it owned everything. It looked right at her, eyes liquid and knowing, not performing for anyone.

Maya froze. The fox tilted its head, almost laughing at her surprise.

"Hey," she whispered.

The fox didn't run. It sat, watching her with zero judgment. No likes, no comments, no algorithm deciding if this moment mattered. Just a creature being exactly what it was.

Something in Maya's chest loosened.

She pulled her phone from her pocket, thumb hovering over the camera. The perfect shot. The caption would write itself: midnight magic, living authentically, vibes.

But the fox turned and slipped into the shadows without looking back.

Maya lowered her phone. The screen went dark.

Back in her room, she tossed the vitamin bottle into the back of her drawer. Some things you couldn't fix with supplements. Some things you didn't need to fix at all.

She opened Instagram, hovered over the app, then deleted it. Not forever — she wasn't dramatic — but for tonight. For now.

Outside her window, somewhere in the darkness, a fox called out. Wild and uncurated.

Maya smiled and finally, actually, slept.
