The Fox at Court Edge

Maya's iphone buzzed in her pocket—another group chat blowing up about Leo's party tonight. She pretended not to notice, stretching her hamstrings at the edge of the padel court.

"You coming tonight?" Chloe called from across the court, twirling her racquet like she owned the place and everyone's weekend plans.

Maya's stomach did that thing it always did lately—like someone was wringing it out like a wet towel. "Maybe. Got stuff."

"Stuff?" Chloe's perfectly manicured eyebrow shot up. "You always have stuff lately."

Before Maya could explain that her "stuff" was mostly panic attacks and overthinking everything, movement caught her eye.

A fox—actual real-life fox—trotted along the fence line like it was completely unbothered by the fact that they were in the middle of suburbia. Its russet coat gleamed under the court lights, and for a second, Maya swore it looked right at her.

"Whoa," someone breathed.

The fox paused, head tilted, then slipped through a gap in the fence and vanished.

"Did everyone see that?" Maya asked, but everyone was already back to talking about Leo's party, like wild animals just wandered through their lives all the time and it wasn't absolutely insane.

Her iphone buzzed again. 12%.

"Great."

"Your cable's in my bag," Chloe said, somehow hearing the problem that Maya hadn't said out loud. "But seriously, you should come. It's not gonna be weird."

Maya stared at the fence gap where the fox had disappeared. Wild things didn't ask for permission to exist. They just showed up, did their fox thing, and left without wondering if everyone was judging their fur or their tail or whether they said the right thing.

"Yeah," Maya said, surprising herself. "Okay. Yeah, I'll come."

Chloe's grin was genuine. "Finally. Don't make me beg, Barnett."

The court lights flickered on, reflecting off the glass wall. Maya's iphone buzzed—Leo himself, adding her to the private event chat.

Somewhere beyond the fence, the fox was probably doing something cooler than standing at the edge of a padel court, overthinking everything. But Maya grabbed her racquet anyway.
