The Fox and the Zombie Garden
Luna was a curious fox with fur the color of autumn leaves. Every night, she crept through the forest, her amber eyes gleaming like tiny moons. She loved discovering magical things — fireflies that sang, stones that hummed, and flowers that glowed when no one was watching.
One evening, Luna smelled something delicious. It wasn't the usual scent of berries or mice. It was something green and fresh, something wonderful. Following her nose, she pushed through a tangled hedge and gasped.
Before her stretched a garden unlike any she'd ever seen. But the strangest part wasn't that the vegetables shimmered with starlight. It was that the vegetables — carrots, tomatoes, peas, and especially the big leafy spinach plants — kept growing back moments after being picked!
"They're zombie vegetables!" a small voice squeaked.
Luna spun around and saw a girl about seven years old, with messy braids and dirt on her nose. The girl looked terrified.
"Zombie?" Luna tilted her head. "You mean like scary monsters?"
"Yes!" The girl trembled. "My grandma said some gardens are enchanted. When vegetables grow back right after you pick them, they're zombie vegetables. They're supposed to be creepy!"
Luna padded forward and touched a spinach leaf with her nose. It felt soft and warm, like it was glowing with magic. She took a bite — and it was the most delicious thing she'd ever tasted, sweeter than sunshine and rainbows mixed together.
"This isn't scary," Luna said, swallowing. "This is magic!"
The girl's eyes widened. "Really? You're not frightened?"
"Why would I be?" Luna laughed. "Magic gardens are wonderful! They never run out of food. That means no one ever goes hungry. That's not scary — that's a gift!"
The girl stepped closer. "I'm Emma," she whispered. "I was supposed to pick spinach for dinner, but when it grew back, I got scared and ran away."
"Well, Emma," Luna said, "I think being scared of magic is silly. Magic is just a mystery waiting to be understood."
Emma smiled and together, they picked fresh spinach and carrots. And that night, Emma's family had the most magical dinner ever — all thanks to a fox who knew that sometimes, the scariest things are actually the most wonderful.
From that day on, Luna and Emma were best friends. And every evening, they visited the zombie garden together, always excited to see what magic would grow next.
