The Fox and the Star Pool

Fiona was a fox with fur the color of autumn leaves and a tail that fluffed like a dandelion. Every evening, she trotted through the Whispering Woods to her favorite spot—a crystal **pool** that caught starlight like a bowl of liquid diamonds.

One moonlit night, Fiona found someone already there. Perched on a mossy rock was a small **sphinx** with kitten-soft fur and tiny wings that sparkled like morning dew.

"Hello," squeaked the sphinx. "I'm Cleo. I'm supposed to guard this pool and ask riddles, but I don't know any yet."

Fiona's ears twitched with surprise. "A sphinx who doesn't know riddles?"

Cleo hung her head. "I'm the youngest in my family. My older brothers and sisters already know hundreds of riddles. But every time I try to make one up, it comes out silly."

Fiona sat beside her. "Show me."

Cleo thought hard. "What has fur but no tail, flies but has no wings, and says hello without making a sound?"

Fiona thought and thought. Then she giggled. "A cloud that looks like a fox!"

Cleo's eyes grew wide. "You understood my riddle! Everyone else said it didn't make sense."

"But it did," said Fiona. "It was creative and fun. Cleo, being different isn't bad—it's magical."

Celo's tiny wings fluttered, and she lifted off the rock, hovering above the **pool**. "You're the first friend who ever really listened to me."

"Friends help each other," said Fiona. "I'll help you practice riddles, and you can help me be braver. I've always wanted to explore the deep forest, but I'm scared of the dark."

"Together," said Cleo, "we'll be the bravest, cleverest team in the woods."

And they were. Every evening, the **fox** and the sphinx met at the starry **pool**, making up silly riddles and planning adventures. They learned that the best magic wasn't in spells or ancient wisdom—it was in friendship, kindness, and believing in each other, even when you're small and your wings are just learning to fly.

The **pool** still catches starlight, but now it also catches something more magical: the sound of two friends laughing together, echoing through the Whispering Woods forever.
