The Fox and the Sleeping Sphinx

Lily discovered the secret garden behind her house on a Tuesday morning, when her dog Rusty chased a butterfly through a hole in the fence.

"Wait, Rusty!" she called, crawling through after him.

What she found made her gasp. In the middle of an overgrown garden stood a magnificent stone sphinx, covered in moss and vines. Its great stone paws held a book, and on its head grew tangles of green hair made of soft moss.

But something else moved in the garden—a slow, shuffling creature with stitched-up clothes and button eyes.

"A zombie!" Lily whispered, hiding behind a rosebush.

Then a clever fox with fur like sunset stepped out from behind a stone. "That's not a zombie," the fox said. "That's Tommy. He's a magical toy who came to life when the moon was full."

Tommy the toy zombie shuffled toward them, moving slowly but smiling. "Hello?" he said in a squeaky voice. "I'm looking for friends."

Rusty wagged his tail and licked Tommy's hand. The zombie giggled.

"I've been asleep so long," the sphinx suddenly spoke, her voice like wind through chimes. "I forgot how wonderful friendship feels."

The moss on her head shimmered and turned into golden flowers. The whole garden began to glow—pink roses bloomed, silver butterflies danced, and a fountain appeared, spraying water that tasted like strawberries.

"I know riddles," said the sphinx. "But I don't know fun. Will you teach me?"

Lily, Rusty, the fox, and Tommy played until sunset. They played tag with the butterflies, had races around the fountain, and the sphinx told stories about ancient Egypt while Tommy made everyone laugh with his funny zombie dance.

"I learned something today," the sphinx said as the moon rose. "Even old stone guardians need friends. And the best magic isn't in riddles or ancient spells—it's in kindness and play."

Lily hugged the sphinx's great stone paw. "We'll come back every day."

And she did, because some secrets are too wonderful to keep—and some friends are too magical to forget.
