The Fox and the Riddle Sphinx

Lily loved sitting on her back porch, peeling a sweet orange while watching the sunset paint the sky brilliant shades of gold. One evening, as the last light faded, a clever little fox trotted out from behind the oak tree. The fox had the softest red fur and the kindest golden eyes Lily had ever seen.

"Follow me," the fox seemed to say with a gentle wag of its tail.

Lily grabbed her backpack, and because her mom had warned her to always stay connected, she tucked her iphone safely inside. Together, she and the fox walked into the enchanted woods that bordered her yard. Fireflies danced around them like tiny floating stars.

Suddenly, they came upon a magnificent sphinx sitting atop a mossy stone. The sphinx had the body of a lion and the face of a wise woman. Her eyes sparkled like ancient secrets.

"Young traveler," the sphinx spoke in a voice like wind chimes, "I have guarded this path for a thousand years. Only those who answer my riddle may pass to the Secret Garden where wishes grow on trees."

Lily's heart beat faster. "I'm ready!"

"I have cities but no houses," the sphinx began, "mountains but no trees, water but no fish. What am I?"

Lily thought hard. She looked at the fox, who offered an encouraging wink. Then she remembered the maps on her iphone at home.

"A map!" Lily exclaimed.

The sphinx smiled, and the stone path before them transformed into a winding trail of flowers that led to a magical garden. In its center stood a gentle bull with a coat like storm clouds and horns of silver. The bull was the Guardian of Wishes.

"Your wish, little one," the bull rumbled softly.

Lily looked at her new friends—the clever fox, the wise sphinx, and the kind guardian bull. "I wish that whenever anyone feels lonely, they'll find a friend waiting for them."

The bull nodded, and a warm golden light spread through the garden. Lily knew her wish had been granted.

On the way home, the fox walked beside her, and when Lily checked her phone, she saw a message from her mom: "Thinking of you. Love you."

Some adventures, Lily realized, are even better when shared—whether with new friends or old ones. And sometimes, the best wishes are the ones we make for others.
