The Fox and the Padel Court

Marcus's first day at Lakewood Academy felt like walking into a place where everyone already knew the secret handshake. The hallway smelled like expensive perfume and expectations, while his backpack still smelled like his old middle school's mystery meat lunch.

"Hey, new kid," a guy called out from near the trophy case. He was wearing a popped collar and the kind of smile that made Marcus's instincts scream. "You play padel?"

"Uh, no?" Marcus said, clutching his backpack straps like a lifeline. "Is that like tennis?"

The guy—Chase, according to his jersey—laughed. "It's like tennis, but cooler. We've got a club membership if you want to join. Saturday morning, 8 AM. Don't be late."

Saturday morning. Marcus stood outside the padel club, his dad's old racket in hand, feeling like a total fraud. The parking lot was filled with luxury cars, and he'd taken the bus. But there was another person waiting on the bench—a girl with wild red hair and the kind of expression that said she'd seen everything and found it wanting.

"You Marcus?" she asked, not looking up from her phone. The charging cable was frayed at the end, wrapped in tape.

"Yeah."

"I'm Riley. And yeah, Chase invited me too. He does this thing where he recruits the new kids, makes them feel special, then roasts them in front of everyone when they can't play." She finally looked up. "It's his little power move. Total bull."

Marcus felt his shoulders drop an inch. "So you're not playing?"

"Oh, I'm playing." Riley grinned, something sly in her expression that made her look like a fox that had just outsmarted a whole pack of hunting dogs. "I'm going to destroy him. My mom runs a sports complex. I've been playing since I was seven."

"Then why'd he invite you?"

"Because I transferred from public school and I dress weird." She gestured at her combat boots and vintage band tee. "He thinks I'm easy prey. He's about to learn otherwise."

Marcus felt something shift in his chest—something like courage, or maybe just the relief of not being alone. "Got room for one more on your team?"

Riley's grin widened. "You know what, Marcus? I think we can work with you. Let's go show Chase and his perfect backhand what real competition looks like."
