The Fox and the Moonlight Fish

vitamingoldfishfox

Fiona the fox lived alone at the edge of the Whispering Woods. Her coat burned bright like autumn leaves, but her heart felt lonely. Every night, she padded down to the old pond to watch the moon reflect on the water.

One summer evening, something sparkled beneath the surface. A tiny goldfish with scales like crushed sunset swam toward her.

"Hello, friend," the goldfish bubbled. "I'm Gilbert."

Fiona's amber eyes went wide. Fish didn't usually talk! "I'm Fiona," she whispered.

Gilbert swam in slow circles. "I need your help. I'm fading away because I'm missing a special vitamin—the moonlight vitamin. It only appears once a year, when the full moon touches the water at exactly midnight. But I'm too weak to splash up and catch it."

Fiona's tail twitched with determination. "Tonight is the full moon! I'll help you."

As midnight approached, Fiona crouched at the pond's edge. The moon hung huge and silver overhead. The moment a moonbeam kissed the water, Fiona's paw flashed out and splashed the magical light right toward Gilbert.

The tiny fish gulped down the shimmering drops. His scales began to glow from within—soft gold, rose, lavender. He grew stronger with each heartbeat.

"Thank you, Fiona!" Gilbert swam joyful loops. "For your kindness, I can grant you one wish. Anything you desire."

Fiona thought hard. She could wish for a cozy den. Or endless berries. Or to never be hungry again.

But she looked at Gilbert, still glowing with new life.

"I wish that you'll never fade away again," she said simply.

Gilbert's eyes shone like stars. "That's exactly what I was hoping you'd say."

The fish swam to the surface and touched Fiona's nose with his fin. Where he touched, a single golden scale appeared on her fur—a friendship mark that would never fade.

"Now we're connected forever," Gilbert said. "Whenever you visit the pond, I'll know. And whenever I need a friend, you'll feel it in your heart."

From that night on, Fiona was never truly lonely. And Gilbert never faded away, because the best vitamin of all is the vitamin of friendship—and that lasts forever.
