The Fox and the Magic Water
Lily discovered the sparkling blue water behind her grandmother's garden one Tuesday morning. It didn't look like ordinary water—it shimmered with tiny rainbows even when there was no sun.
"Beautiful, isn't it?" said a voice. Lily jumped and turned to see a bright orange fox sitting on a mossy rock. His tail was fluffy and his eyes sparkled like the water itself. "I'm Oliver. I've been waiting for someone brave enough to find this place."
"Waiting for what?" Lily asked, kneeling beside the magical pool.
"The sphinx said someone would come who could help our friend," Oliver explained. "Someone with a kind heart."
He led Lily through a hidden path in the woods until they reached an ancient stone archway. Perched on top was a magnificent creature with the body of a lion and the head of a wise human—the sphinx.
"Welcome, young one," the sphinx rumbled gently. "I have a riddle for you. What looks scary but is only lonely? What seems frightening but just needs a friend?"
Lily thought carefully. "A monster?"
"Close," said the sphinx. "Follow the path to the cave. You'll understand."
Inside the dim cave, Lily saw him—a zombie! But he wasn't scary at all. He was sitting sadly, his greenish skin looking more like moss than anything frightening. He looked up with eyes full of tears.
"Everyone runs away," he mumbled. "But I'm just lonely. I was cursed by an old wizard, and now I look this way. I only want someone to talk to."
Lily smiled and sat beside him. "I'm Lily, and this is Oliver. We came to make friends."
The zombie's face lit up. "Really?"
They spent the afternoon playing games and sharing stories. The magical water from the pool sparkled around them, and slowly, the zombie's greenish skin began to glow warmer and warmer.
"Your friendship broke the curse!" Oliver cheered.
The zombie—now a regular boy named Leo—grinned. "Thank you for seeing me, not what I looked like."
Lily learned that day that true friendship looks past appearances, and sometimes the scariest things just need a little kindness to become beautiful.
