The Fox and the Crystal Pool
Felix the fox had the softest orange fur in the forest, but he had a secret — he loved to spy on the magic that happened near the old oak tree after midnight. Most animals were asleep, but Felix's bright eyes always stayed open.
One summer night, lightning flashed across the sky, turning everything as bright as day for just a moment. In that quick light, Felix saw something he'd never noticed before. Behind a curtain of ivy leaves, there was a hidden pool that shimmered like liquid stars.
Felix crept closer, his paws silent on the soft grass. The pool wasn't just water — it glowed with a soft blue light, tiny sparkles dancing across its surface like captured fireflies.
"Hello there, little spy," said a voice.
Felix jumped! A golden fish with scales like tiny sunbeams swam to the surface of the glowing pool. The goldfish smiled, which is something fish don't usually do.
"I'm Gracie," she said. "This is the Crystal Pool. It only appears when lightning strikes the old oak tree — which happens once every hundred years! Tonight's the night."
"What happens tonight?" Felix asked, his tail twitching with excitement.
"The pool grants one wish to someone pure of heart," Gracie explained. "Someone who uses their curiosity for good, not for mischief."
Felix thought about all the times he'd spied on baby birds learning to fly, or watched flowers bloom in the spring. He'd never told anyone about the magic he'd seen, but he'd always wanted to share it.
"I wish," Felix said softly, "that every animal could see the magic I see when I stay awake at night. I want to share the wonder, not keep it a secret anymore."
Gracie's scales glowed brighter than ever. The pool rippled, and tiny lights floated up into the air like bubbles, drifting toward the forest. They settled over sleeping animals — deer, rabbits, owls, and even little beetles.
"Come tomorrow night," Gracie said, "and they'll all be awake to see the magic with you. You'll never have to spy alone again."
Felix ran home, his heart full of joy. The best adventures, he learned, are the ones you share with friends. And starting tomorrow, he'd have plenty of friends for every magical midnight.
