The Fox Against the World

Maya's legs burned as she kept running, each stride a rebellion against the expectations crushing her. AP Chem test tomorrow. College apps due Friday. Instagram likes dropping. She felt like a zombie moving through her own life, powered by caffeine and desperation.

She stopped at the edge of the woods, gulping air. The sunset painted everything orange—her favorite color now, because her mom had said it looked "too aggressive" on her. Good.

That's when she saw it. A fox, all russet and clever eyes, watching her from between the trees. Not moving. Just watching, like it knew something she didn't.

"What are you looking at?" she muttered, wiping sweat from her forehead. "You think I don't know I'm a mess?"

Her phone buzzed in her pocket. Probably her group chat blowing up over some drama she didn't have the energy to care about. Probably her dad asking if she'd taken her vitamin D supplement yet because her doctor said her levels were low and everything was always LOW with her—iron, motivation, serotonin.

The fox tilted its head. Then it turned and vanished into the trees.

Maya followed.

The path narrowed, branches scratching at her arms. She ran until her lungs screamed, until the zombie feeling dissolved into something sharp and real. The fox led her to a clearing where the last orange light of day caught on an old oak tree, someone's initials carved into the bark years ago.

She didn't care about being perfect anymore. She didn't care about the test, the likes, the vitamins that were supposed to fix everything. She stood there, breathing, alive, while the fox watched from the shadows.

And for the first time in forever, Maya didn't feel like she was running away. She was running toward something.

Herself.
