The Forest of Forgotten Things

Lily found the shiny black device half-buried in the moss. An iphone—older than any she'd seen, with a cracked screen that still glowed with a soft blue light. Her dog Barnaby, a scruffy golden mutt, sniffed it curiously.

"Strange," Lily whispered, tapping the screen. Suddenly, the forest around them shimmered like heat waves.

A rust-red fox with three tails popped out from behind a fern. Not frightened at all, the fox tilted her head and spoke: "You've found the Lost Phone! It calls the Forgotten Things."

Before Lily could ask what that meant, the ground began to rumble. Up from the earth rose creatures—not scary ones, but a gentle zombie made of fallen leaves and twigs, and a skeleton rabbit made of moonlight. They weren't frightening. They were lonely.

"We've been forgotten," the leaf zombie said in a voice like rustling paper. "Children don't play in this forest anymore. They're inside with their phones."

Lily looked down at the glowing device in her hand. "But I'm outside," she said. "And I have both."

The fox with three tails nodded wisely. "The magic isn't the phone, child. The magic is YOU—choosing to explore, to wonder, to make friends with creatures others forget."

Lily knelt and hugged the leaf zombie, despite its crinkly form. Barnaby barked happily and chased the moonlight rabbit through the trees. The fox smiled, her three tails swishing.

"We'll remember you," the creatures promised.

And every day after, Lily returned to the forest. The iphone stayed buried, but something better glowed in her heart: the knowledge that the world is full of magic for those who look up from their screens long enough to see it.

Sometimes, she whispered, the best adventures are the ones you can't hold in your hand—but can hold in your heart forever.
