The Food Chain

Jordan stood at the bottom of the social pyramid—again. Week three of sophomore year, and somehow she'd already managed to become invisible in the cafeteria. She sat alone with her sandwich, watching the popular crowd's table like it was a different ecosystem.

"Yo, Jordan!" Marcus slid onto the bench across from her, his skateboard somehow not crashing into anyone. "You coming to Kai's party tonight?"

Jordan shrugged. "Maybe. If I can find someone to go with."

"Just go. Who cares?" Marcus took a bite of his apple. "Besides, rumor has it there's gonna be a beer bear."

"A what now?"

"You know—a bear made of beer cans. Like those pyramid things people build?" He gestured vaguely. "Kai's older brother's supposed to help them make one."

Jordan had to laugh. "That sounds like a disaster waiting to happen."

"Exactly." Marcus grinned. "That's why you gotta be there."

That night, Jordan stood in Kai's backyard, watching three drunk juniors attempt to stack empty cans into something resembling a pyramid. It kept collapsing, cans rolling everywhere like metallic tumbleweeds. Someone's cat—a scrawny tabby with one ear—sat on a nearby fence, watching them with what looked like judgment.

"This is stupid," someone whispered behind her.

Jordan turned to see Riley, the impossibly cool junior who'd somehow never noticed her before. "Yeah. But kind of amazing, right?"

Riley's eyes crinkled. "Totally amazing stupid." She held out a red Solo cup. "Want some punch? I promise it's not suspicious."

Jordan took it. Their fingers brushed. "Thanks."

The pyramid finally collapsed for the third time, sending cans everywhere. The cat bolted. Someone yelled something that might've been victory or defeat. In that moment, Jordan realized something: the social pyramid wasn't actually real. It was just a bunch of people stacking empty cans, hoping they wouldn't fall.

And sometimes, the best moments happened when everything crashed down around you.

"Hey," Riley said, "you wanna get out of here? There's this taco truck..."

Jordan smiled, feeling something shift inside her—like she'd just climbed to the top of her own pyramid, one rung at a time. "Lead the way."
