The Food Chain

Maya stared at the competitive eating team sign-up sheet, feeling like total cringe. But when you're a sophomore at Northwood High, invisible to the popular crowd, you'll join anything to avoid being nobody.

"You sure about this?" asked Liam, the team captain who moved through the cafeteria like a cat—quiet, impossible to ignore, and somehow always landing on his feet.

"Whatever," she said, trying to channel the same don't-mess-with-me energy that her older sister used when their parents got divorced. "How bad can it be?"

Pretty bad, actually. The team's social hierarchy was a pyramid, and at the bottom sat the spinach challenge. Fifty ounces of creamed spinach in ten minutes. Maya had signed up thinking it would be funny, something to post about. Now, watching the previous contestant turn green and sprint for the bathroom, she wondered if maybe she should've just joined the robotics club instead.

"You got this," Liam whispered, handing her a bottle of water. "Just don't think about it. Zone out. Go full zombie mode—no pain, no feeling, just keep swallowing."

The first spoonful hit her tongue like a punishment from god. But somewhere around minute six, something clicked. The cafeteria's noise faded to a buzz. Her classmates' whispers became meaningless static. For the first time since starting high school, Maya wasn't worrying about being awkward or saying the wrong thing or whether that fox across the room—Jake, who'd barely looked at her all semester—was watching.

She was just a machine, processing spinach, immune to embarrassment, totally free.

"TIME!" someone yelled, and Maya blinked back to reality, stomach roiling but strangely triumphant.

Jake was watching. Actually grinning. And when he high-fived her later, spinach-green stains on her shirt like battle scars, she realized something: nobody becomes who they're supposed to be by playing it safe. Sometimes you have to swallow something gross to find out what you're made of.

"Same time next week?" Liam asked.

Maya wiped her mouth and smiled. "Bet."
