The Food Chain

Maya's first week at Northwood High felt like walking into a nature documentary she hadn't signed up to audition for. The cafeteria had divided itself into distinct ecosystems, and she was just trying to survive without getting eaten.

"That's the Fox table," Kayla whispered, nodding toward a cluster of girls with effortless hair and chaotic-good energy. "They'll be nice to your face, then roast you on their finsta by second period."

Maya adjusted her oversized hoodie—comfort over conformity, right? Then she spotted him: Liam, sitting alone with headphones, sketching in a beat-up notebook. Cute in that tortured-artist way that Maya pretended she wasn't attracted to.

"Bear's been through it," Kayla followed her gaze. "His dad's sick, so everyone's giving him space. But he's chill."

The bell rang. Maya's stomach did that thing—like a cat purring against anxiety's cold shoulder. AP Bio awaited, her safe harbor until she realized her lab partner was none other than Queen Fox herself, Chloe.

"New girl?" Chloe's smile was sharpened steel wrapped in bubblegum. "Sit. We're doing this project together, and I don't do slackers."

Two weeks later, Maya found herself at Chloe's house, supposedly studying but mostly watching Chloe apply winged eyeliner with surgical precision. "You know," Chloe said, catching Maya's reflection in the mirror, "you're not as basic as I thought."

"Thanks? I think?"

Chloe laughed—genuine, surprising. "Most new girls try so hard. You just... are. It's lowkey refreshing."

The praise hit different. Maya found herself pulled between worlds—Chloe's Fox table with their perfectly curated aesthetic, Liam's quiet corner by the art room where she'd started spending lunch, and Kayla's relentless ambition to climb the social ladder.

Then came the home game where everything fractured. Tyler—self-proclaimed "bull" of the football team—decided Liam's sketchbook was fair game for comedy. Snatched it right from his hands, started reading pages aloud while his backup dancers laughed.

Maya didn't think. She just moved.

"Give it back, Tyler."

The whole stadium went quiet. Fox table frozen. Bull paused, genuinely confused that someone—someone who'd been invisible two weeks ago—was challenging him.

"Or what?"

"Or I tell everyone what you said about Coach Miller's daughter at that party last weekend."

Silence stretched like a tightrope. Tyler's face went red as his letterman jacket. He dropped the sketchbook. Maya picked it up, handed it to Liam with hands that only shook a little.

Monday morning, the food chain had rearranged itself. Fox table nodded respect in the hallway. Tyler avoided her eyes. Liam sat with her and Kayla at lunch, sketching while Chloe debated whether Maya was technically part of their ecosystem now.

"You know," Chloe said, stealing a fry from Maya's tray, "you're kinda feral. I dig it."

Maya smiled, finally feeling like she'd found her place—not at the top of the food chain, not hiding at the bottom, but somewhere in the middle, wild and unapologetically herself.
