The Fishbowl Dance
Maya pulled the brim of her dad's old fedora **hat** lower, trying to disappear. Tonight was the Winter Formal, and standing outside the gym felt like standing outside a parallel universe where everyone knew how to be normal except her.
"You coming in?" asked Leo, bouncing on his heels beside her. His date had bailed forty minutes ago, yet here he was, waiting for Maya to decide if she was brave enough to enter the **water** of teenage social warfare alone.
The bass from inside thumped against her chest. "I feel like a **goldfish**," Maya admitted. "Like everyone's watching me from outside the bowl, waiting to see if I'll swim or float."
Leo laughed, and something in her chest unclenched. "That's literally everyone in there. Even the popular kids are just pretending they know what they're doing."
Her **palm**s were sweating so much she had to wipe them on her dress. "You think?"
"I know. Tyler threw up in the bathroom earlier because he was so nervous about asking Jordan to dance. It's a whole vibe out here." He gestured at the line of couples and solo students lingering near the doors. "We're all just **bear**ing it through the awkward parts until it gets fun."
Maya smiled, straightening her hat. "Okay. But if anyone asks about the fedora, it's vintage fashion. Not a security blanket."
"Deal. Now let's go in there before they play another slow song and I miss my chance."
Inside, colored lights swept across faces that were suddenly just faces—friends, classmates, people all trying to figure out this whole being human thing together. The hat stayed on, but Maya's shoulders dropped. She wasn't invisible anymore, but maybe that was okay.
Some nights, you don't need to be the coolest person in the room. You just need someone to stand with you outside the fishbowl while you work up the courage to jump in.
