The Filter vs. The Real
Maya's hands shook as she scrolled through Instagram on her iPhone, waiting for her mom to pick her up from swim practice. Hair slicked back with chlorine, smelling like the pool locker room, she looked nothing like the filtered version of herself she posted online.
"You coming to Jake's party tonight?" Chloe asked, bouncing on her toes. "Everyone's going swimming in his lake. It's gonna be epic."
Maya's stomach did that thing where it felt like her insides were doing jumping jacks. "I don't know..."
"Don't be weird, just come." Chloe tilted her head. "Unless you're scared Lucas will see you without your Mayfair filter."
Maya rolled her eyes but felt seen. Too seen.
The party was already popping when she arrived. Kids everywhere, music thumping, laughter floating across the water. Maya sat on the dock, knees pulled to her chest, watching everyone splash around like they didn't have a care in the world.
Then Lucas sat beside her. Wet shirt clinging to his stomach, droplets running down his neck.
"You're not swimming?"
"Maybe later."
"Cool." He bumped her shoulder with his. "I saw your post from last weekend. That fox hat was sick."
Maya blinked. "You saw that?"
"Yeah. I was gonna comment but..." Lucas rubbed the back of his neck. "Whatever, it doesn't matter."
"What? Tell me."
"I was running through my notifications and missed my window. Then it felt weird to comment three days later." He laughed self-consciously. "I overthink everything."
Maya stared at him. Lucas, the guy she'd been crushing on for months, who seemed so confident and chill, got nervous about commenting on her posts?
"I overthink everything too," she admitted.
"No way. You always look so... put together."
"That's literally the point of filters, Lucas." Maya stood up. "I'm going swimming."
"Wait—really?"
"Yeah. You coming?"
His grin was real, unfiltered. "Bet."
Later that night, Maya posted a picture of herself and Lucas by the lake. Hair frizzy from the water, chlorine-smelling, no filter, both making faces at the camera.
The caption read: "Real life > curated life."
It got 47 likes. But Lucas's comment was the only one that mattered: "This one's better."
