The Filter That Broke Free
Maya's fingers flew across her iPhone screen, doomscrolling through party pics she wasn't invited to. Again.
The printed baseball hat pulled low over her face had become her security blanket lately. A literal and metaphorical shield against the world. Under the brim, she could hide.
"You coming to the lake?" Keisha called from downstairs. "Everyone's going swimming."
Maya hesitated. Lake parties meant swimsuits, and swimsuits meant exposure. Literally and metaphorically. Her stomach did that familiar flip thing it did whenever she had to be Visible.
"Nah, I'm good," she called back.
"Maya, seriously? You've been hiding in your room since school ended. When did you become this person?"
The question hit harder than Maya expected. When HAD she become this person? The girl who'd rather watch life happen through a screen than actually live it?
She grabbed her swimsuit. Maybe it was time to stop running from everything.
The lake was chaos. Music, splashing, someone's older brother showing off on the dock. Maya stood at the edge, hugging herself. Everyone looked so comfortable in their skin. How did they do that?
Then she saw him — Liam from history class, sitting alone on the dock, baseball cap backward, scrolling through his phone like she'd been doing five minutes ago.
Something clicked.
She waded in, fully clothed.
People stared. Someone laughed. But Maya kept walking until the water reached her waist, then she dunked completely. When she surfaced, sopping wet, her hat floating away like a tiny boat, she caught Liam's eye.
He smiled. Put his phone in his pocket. Slid into the water.
"Finally," he said. "I thought I was the only one who didn't get the memo about having to be Performance Perfect all summer."
Maya laughed, really laughed, for the first time in months. Her iPhone sat on the shore, safely dry, its glowing screen just another light in the distance.
Some things, she realized, you couldn't capture in a photo or fit into a caption. You just had to jump in and let the water hold you up.
