The Feline Informant
The iPhone screen glowed at 2:47 AM, its blue light the only illumination in Elena's apartment. She'd been watching him for weeks now—her husband, Mark, through the digital eye of his own phone, which he'd foolishly left synced to their shared iPad.
Tonight, the messages had shifted from flirtatious to something darker. "The asset is compromised," read the latest from an unknown number. "Meeting at 0500. Don't bring the wife."
Elena's hands trembled. A spy? After seven years of marriage, she realized she didn't know him at all. The man who made coffee every Sunday, who cried during old movies, who'd held her mother's hand at the funeral—was any of it real?
A soft weight landed on her chest. Lucifer, their black cat, purred loudly, pressing his forehead against her chin. The cat had always preferred Mark, following him from room to room like a shadow. Elena had found it annoying, another proof of Mark's effortless charm.
Now she noticed something else. Lucifer kept walking to the bedroom door, meowing at the handle, then returning to nudge Elena's phone with his nose.
"What?" she whispered. "You want me to follow him?"
The cat blinked slowly, amber eyes knowing.
At 4:45 AM, Mark slipped out the door. Elena waited three minutes, then followed. Lucifer darted ahead, pausing at corners to check if she was still coming.
They wound through predawn streets to a warehouse district. There, Lucifer led her behind a dumpster where another cat—a tabby—waited. Between them, carefully wrapped in plastic, lay a thick stack of documents and a hard drive.
Elena crouched, heart hammering. Her phone, still connected to Mark's, buzzed with new messages: "Corporate espionage. FBI on the way. Clean up."
The tabby cat meowed sharply, then bounded away toward a woman in a trench coat—FBI, Elena realized. They'd been using cats as couriers. Mark was a whistleblower, not a traitor.
She buried her face in Lucifer's fur, laughing and crying as the first light broke over the city. "You clever bastard," she whispered. "You really are a spy."
