The Feline Analyst

Elena smoothed the wide-brimmed hat she'd worn to the gala, her fingers trembling. Across the room, Marcus laughed with the CEO of Chen Dynamics, his hand lingering too long on the other woman's arm. He was supposed to be gathering intel, not falling for the target. Again.

Their cat, Berkeley, sat on the windowsill at home, judging her. Elena had named him after the agency's headquarters—a joke that stopped being funny three years ago. Now Berkeley watched through her video feed, yellow eyes narrowed as if he knew she was breaking.

"You're compromised," her handler had said that morning. "We're pulling you out."

But then Marcus had texted: *Spinach stuck in my teeth. Can't stop thinking about you.*

The message had made her smile, then cry. They'd used codes before. Spinach meant extraction needed. The dog next door—Buster, whose walks Marcus timed his departures around—would bark twice if someone was watching the house.

Elena watched Marcus now, charming secrets out of the woman who'd built her fortune on stolen algorithms. He was a natural spy: warm, disarming, utterly sincere in his moments. Except when he wasn't.

She touched the ring in her pocket. Real. The marriage certificate at home? Also real. The lies between them? The truest thing they'd ever shared.

The dog outside started barking.

Elena's phone vibrated. *Got it. Meet me at the place.*

The spinach wasn't stuck in his teeth. It was the signal. Marcus had everything they needed. He was done.

She adjusted her hat one last time, caught his eye across the room. He nodded—barely, but she saw it. A lifetime of understanding in that tilt of his head.

The woman beside him laughed, head thrown back, exposing her throat. Marcus smiled back, but his eyes were already leaving her.

Elena walked out into the night, away from the man she loved, toward the life she'd agreed to. The dog's barking faded. Somewhere, a cat waited. Tomorrow, someone else would wear the hat. Tonight, she just kept walking.
