The Fedora & The Filter
Maya's fingers hovered over the send button, her iPhone screen illuminating her darkened bedroom. The party was tonight—her first real high school party—and she'd spent forty minutes perfecting the selfie. Two filters, careful angle, caption: "ready to socialize 😏"
Her phone dinged almost instantly. Jake from bio class liked it. She let out a breath she didn't know she was holding.
The problem was, Maya wasn't ready to socialize. She was ready to hide.
She pulled on her dad's old fedora, the one she'd stolen from his closet last week. It was stupid—who wore fedoras to house parties? But the hat felt like armor. Under its brim, she could be mysterious. Edgy. Someone who didn't overthink bathroom selfies.
"You look ridiculous," her little brother observed from the doorway, holding his goldfish bowl. "Bubbles says you're trying too hard."
"Shut up, Tyler. Bubbles is a fish."
"Bubbles has more game than you." He pointed to her phone, which was blowing up. People were commenting. "OMG who's that?!" "New look?!" "She's so cool now."
Cool. Because of a hat.
The party was everything Maya feared. Too loud, too bright, too many people whose lives looked perfect on Instagram. She stood by the snack table, clutching a red solo cup like it contained the antidote to social anxiety.
"Love the hat," said Chloe, the actual coolest person in tenth grade. "It's very... vintage cool."
Maya opened her mouth to say something chill and witty, but what came out was: "Thanks, I found it in my—" and then she laughed, spraying spinach dip everywhere.
Not on herself. On Chloe's white jeans.
The room went silent. Maya wanted to dissolve. She could already see the group chat: "remember when spinach dip maya ruined chloe's pants lol"
But Chloe just wiped it off with a napkin. "Whatever, these were old anyway. You good?"
"I'm—yeah. Sorry."
"Don't be." Chloe's eyes crinkled. "Wanna help me finish this dip before someone else notices?"
Later that night, Maya scrolled through her phone. No viral humiliation. Just a photo Chloe had posted: Maya laughing, spinach on her chin, fedora slightly crooked. Caption: "this one 😂"
Her thumb hovered over the filter option. Then she closed Instagram.
The hat stayed on her floor. She didn't need it tomorrow.
