The Fedora Incident

doghatcablefriend

Maya's hands shook as she adjusted the ridiculous fedora on her head. Why had she let Jen talk her into wearing this? It was practically screaming 'try-hard' from across the room.

The house party was already in full swing — bass thumping through the floorboards, red solo cups everywhere, and that distinctive smell of cheap body spray and nervous energy. Maya had spent forty-five minutes on her eyeliner alone, only to hide behind this stupid hat like a literal shield.

'You're not actually gonna keep that on all night, are you?'

Maya jumped. It was Leo — the guy from her AP English class who always sat in the back row drawing in his notebook. He was holding a tangled mass of HDMI cables, looking like he'd just escaped a disaster zone.

'Long story,' Maya mumbled, reaching for the hat brim. 'Tech support?'

'Kyle's dog decided the entertainment center was her personal enemy.' Leo gestured toward the corner, where a very guilty-looking golden retriever was pretending to be extremely interested in a discarded chip. 'Chewed right through the main cable. Party's over, basically.'

Maya snorted. 'RIP to the vibes.'

Leo grinned, and something in her chest did that annoying flutter thing. 'Honestly? This is better.' He nodded toward the growing crowd of people who'd given up on TikTok dancing and were actually talking. 'Sometimes you need the forced chill, you know?'

Maya looked around — really looked. The hat suddenly felt less like armor and more like... well, just a hat. She took it off.

'Yeah,' she said, running a hand through her hair. 'Yeah, I do know.'

'Wanna help me figure out which cable is which?' Leo asked, already walking backward toward the mess of wires. 'I'll trade you for the rights to make fun of this disaster later.'

Maya smiled — a real one, not the practiced one she'd been using all night. 'Deal.'

Sometimes the best nights weren't the ones you planned for. Sometimes they involved destroyed technology, an aggressive dog, and accidentally finding exactly what you needed — even if you were too busy hiding behind a fedora to notice it at first.
