The Fedora Diaries

Maya pulled the brim of her dad's vintage fedora lower, practically disappearing inside its shadow like a turtle retreating into its shell. The hat had become her armor lately—a weird affectation, yeah, but better than letting anyone see the anxiety written all over her face.

She sat on the edge of the patio at Jake's end-of-summer blowout, nursing a lukewarm soda and basically acting like a spy reconning the enemy territory. Not that the popular crew were enemies—they barely knew she existed. That was the problem.

"Nice hat," said a voice behind her.

Maya jumped, nearly spilling her drink. Chloe, the effortlessly gorgeous junior whose Instagram posts Maya had been lowkey studying for months, stood there holding a plate of cupcakes.

"Thanks," Maya managed, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear. "It's... vintage."

"No way, really?" Chloe's eyes lit up. "I love vintage stuff. Hey, you wanna see something cool?"

Before Maya could process what was happening, Chloe grabbed her hand and studied her palm like it held the secrets of the universe. "Your head line is super long—you're gonna be famous one day. Like, creative famous. Writer? Artist?"

Maya's secret blog—the anonymous one where she spilled all her teenage angst—flashed through her mind. "Something like that."

"I knew it!" Chloe squealed. Then she pointed across the yard. "That orange cat over there? The one that's been staring at us for five minutes? It's totally judging us right now."

Maya looked. A stray tabby sat on the fence, indeed watching them with unimpressed yellow eyes.

"His name is Barnaby," Maya found herself saying. "I've been feeding him behind the school library."

"Wait," Chloe lowered her voice dramatically, "are you the mysterious Barnaby feeder? There's literally a whole Instagram account dedicated to finding out who it is. People think it's a senior." She paused. "But it's YOU. The new sophomore in the cool hat."

Something shifted between them—something electric and unexpected. By the time Jake's mom started breaking up the party at midnight, Maya had Chloe's number, three new followers, and an invitation to the first Creative Writing Club meeting of the year.

The hat, it turned out, hadn't been hiding her. It had been signaling exactly who she was to the people who mattered.

Barnaby the cat watched from the fence, looking suspiciously like he'd planned this whole thing.
