The Fedora by the Poolside

Elena adjusted the brim of her fedora, checking her reflection in the club's glass doors. At forty-seven, she never thought she'd be playing corporate spy, but here she was—padel racket in hand, hunting for trade secrets at Exeter's most exclusive tennis club.

The assignment was simple: get close to Marcus Chen, the tech executive rumored to be poaching her company's engineers. But as Elena stepped onto the padel court, watching Marcus stretch his hamstrings with practiced ease, she felt an unfamiliar flutter in her chest. He was younger, yes—mid-thirties—but there was something in his eyes that suggested he carried his own weight of loneliness.

"Nice hat," he said, grinning as he returned her serve. "Vintage?"

"Family heirloom," she lied smoothly, though the truth was she'd bought it yesterday to look the part of eccentric widow. "My husband's. He died last year."

The confession slipped out unbidden, and she cursed herself. But Marcus's expression softened. "I'm sorry. I lost my mother last spring."

They played until twilight, the competitive edge giving way to something else—laughter, shared stories, the electric proximity of two souls tired of pretending. When Marcus invited her to his villa for a swim, Elena knew she should decline. Instead, she found herself slipping into his heated pool, clothes abandoned on the terrace.

underwater, she watched him surface through rippling moonlight, and for the first time in years, she forgot why she'd come.

His golden retriever, Barnaby, barked joyfully from the deck, breaking the spell. As they climbed out, dripping and breathless, Marcus said, "I know who you work for, Elena. I've known since our third game."

She froze, reaching for her towel—and the flash drive in her bag.

"I don't care about the spying," he continued, dripping pool water onto the stone. "But if you're interested in what's real between us... put the hat back on and stay for dinner."

Barnaby wagged his tail, and Elena made her choice.
