The Ethernet Lifeline

catfriendwatercable

Maya's cat Luna tangled around her ankles like a fluffy orange anxiety detector as Maya stared at her phone. Party at Jake's house. Swimming. Social suicide.

"You're going, right?" her friend Kai had texted three hours ago. "Everyone's gonna be there."

Maya wasn't everyone material. She was hide-in-her-room-with-Luna material. But Kai had promised to stay by her side the whole time, and honestly? Maya was tired of being the girl who never showed up.

Jake's backyard was already chaos when she arrived. Kids cannonballing into the pool, music blasting, someone doing something questionable with a garden hose. Maya clutched her phone like a lifeline until Kai appeared, grinning.

"You made it!" Kai practically shouted over the music. "Come on, I want you to meet someone."

The water glittered like liquid diamonds under the party lights, inviting and terrifying all at once. Maya was about to decline when suddenly—everything went dark. Music cut mid-chorus. The pool lights died. Someone screamed dramatically.

"Everyone chill!" Jake's voice rang out. "The cable's just loose again. Happens all the time."

Maya found herself standing near the back door where Jake was fumbling with a tangled mess of cables. Without thinking, she stepped forward. "Need help?"

Jake looked relieved. "Please. My dad's gonna kill me if I mess this up again."

Together they traced the loose connection, Maya's fingers finding the right port while Jake held the flashlight from his phone. When the music roared back to life, everyone cheered like they'd just won the lottery.

"You're like a wizard," Jake said, genuinely impressed. "Thanks."

"My dad's IT," Maya shrugged, feeling weirdly proud. "It's genetic."

Later, as she and Kai sat on the edge of the pool, feet dangling in the water, Maya realized something. She'd come prepared to drown socially, but instead she'd found her footing. Sometimes the unexpected moments—the darkness, the broken cables, the random fixes—were exactly what you needed to shine.
