The Energy Drink Pyramid
Marcus stood at the entrance of Westwood High, staring at his phone. Another text from Jason: 'Bro, you're missing out. This is THE opportunity. You in or what?'
The 'opportunity' was VOLTForce—this 'revolutionary' energy drink that Jason and half the junior class had been obsessing over. Jason had promised Marcus could make serious money selling it, said he'd already made three hundred bucks his first week.
'Man, whatever,' Marcus muttered, sliding his phone into his hoodie pocket. He was tired of feeling like a zombie dragging himself through first period AP Bio, barely keeping his eyes open while everyone else seemed bursting with unnatural energy. Maybe Jason was onto something.
That afternoon, Marcus sat in Jason's basement with six other guys, all wearing VOLTForce snapbacks. At the front stood Derek—senior, starting linebacker for the football team, built like a brick house. Derek was exactly the kind of bull who'd tripped Marcus in the hallway freshman year, the kind everyone instinctively gave space to.
'Check it out,' Derek said, pulling up a chart on his phone. 'It's not MLM, okay? It's NETWORK MARKETING. Totally different. You bring in three people, they bring in three people—that's where the real money happens.' He traced a triangular shape in the air. 'It's a pyramid, but like, a GOOD pyramid. Like, ancient Egypt style. Mystical. Powerful.'
Everyone nodded. Marcus felt sick.
'You in, freshman?' Derek locked eyes with him.
Marcus thought about his mom working double shifts, about how he'd promised her he'd focus on school this year. He thought about the three hundred bucks Jason claimed to have made, about how Jason's parents had bought him that new BMW.
'Nah,' Marcus heard himself say. 'I'm good.'
The room went silent. Derek stared him down for what felt like forever.
'Your loss,' Derek said finally, turning back to the chart. 'Some people just don't have what it takes.'
Marcus walked out of that basement feeling something he hadn't felt in a long time: proud. Maybe he'd missed out on easy money, maybe he'd have to keep dragging through classes like a zombie for a while longer. But at least he was finally awake.
