The Dragon Who Lived In My Hair

Mei had the most extraordinary hair in the whole third grade. It wasn't just curly—it was magical. Whenever she felt happy, her hair shimmered like sunshine. When she was sad, it turned the color of storm clouds. And when she was excited? It sparkled with rainbow lights!

One Tuesday, while Mei was running through the park (she was the fastest runner in school, you know), she felt a tiny tickle near her left ear. She stopped running and reached up to investigate.

"Who's there?" she whispered.

To her surprise, a voice answered! "I'm Puff! And I've been hiding in your hair for three whole days!"

Mei gasped as a tiny dragon, no bigger than her thumb, peeked out from behind a particularly bouncy curl. He had emerald-green scales and wings like a butterfly.

"But... why were you hiding?" Mei asked.

Puff looked embarrassed. "I was sent as a spy. The Dragon Queen wanted to find the kindest child in the world, and she chose me to watch you. But I couldn't spy on you, Mei! You're too wonderful!"

Puff told Mei how he'd watched her share her lunch with classmates who forgot theirs. How she helped fallen birds back into their nests. How she always made sure everyone felt included during recess.

"So you're my friend now? Not a spy?" Mei asked, her hair turning a delighted shade of pink.

"The best friend ever!" Puff declared. "And as a bonus, I can make you run even faster! Watch this!"

Puff blew a stream of golden sparkles over Mei, and suddenly she felt light as a feather. That afternoon, Mei discovered something amazing: when you have a dragon as a friend, and you run with joy in your heart, you can run faster than anyone—and the best part is, you never have to run alone.

From that day on, Mei's hair was always extra sparkly, because nothing makes hair shine brighter than the magic of true friendship.
