The Dragon's Orange Egg

Lily loved exploring her grandmother's garden, but she never expected to find something magical among the tomato plants. One Tuesday morning, she spotted an odd-shaped orange resting near the fence. It wasn't round like normal oranges — it was pointy on both ends and shimmered with tiny rainbow sparkles in the sunlight.

"That's the strangest orange I've ever seen," she whispered, reaching for it. But before her fingers could touch it, the orange wobbled!

Lily gasped and jumped back. The orange rolled toward her grandmother's spinach patch, then stopped suddenly. A tiny crack appeared on its surface, followed by another, and another.

*CRACK!*

The orange split open, and out tumbled the smallest dragon Lily had ever seen. He was no bigger than a kitten, with scales the color of sunset oranges and emerald-green eyes that sparkled like jewels.

"Hello there," Lily said softly, kneeling down. The baby dragon sneezed, sending tiny puffs of smoke into the air. He looked around nervously until Lily offered him a piece of spinach from the garden. To her surprise, the dragon gobbled it up happily and nuzzled her hand with his warm, snout-nose.

"I'll call you Sunny," Lily decided. But she couldn't keep him a secret forever. Her best friend Marcus was coming over that afternoon, and she needed help figuring out how to care for a baby dragon.

When Marcus arrived, his eyes went wide. "Is that... a DRAGON?"

"His name is Sunny, and he loves spinach," Lily explained. Together, the two friends researched what baby dragons needed. They built a cozy nest from old blankets, found more spinach in the garden, and even discovered that Sunny's favorite treat was orange slices — just like his egg had looked!

That evening, Sunny curled up between them, his tiny purrs sounding like a rumbling thunderstorm. Lily realized something important: the best discoveries are meant to be shared. What good was a magical dragon if you had no friend to help you care for him?

As the sun set, painting the sky in shades of orange and pink, Lily, Marcus, and Sunny watched the first stars appear together. Sometimes, she thought, the most wonderful friendships start with something as simple as a strange orange in a spinach patch.
