The Dog Who Threw Starlight
Leo's hair was the color of sunset oranges. Every day at school, kids pointed and laughed. "Orange hair! Orange hair!" they chanted. Leo would pull his hood low and wish he could disappear.
One afternoon, sitting alone at the park, Leo heard something rustle. From behind the baseball diamond emerged a dog—not a regular dog. This dog's fur shimmered like morning dew on grass.
The dog trotted over and nudged Leo's hand with a wet nose. Then something amazing happened: the dog spoke! "I'm Sparky," the dog said. "And I bet you're wonderful."
Leo's eyes went wide. "You can talk?"
"Magical dogs can do lots of things," Sparky winked. "Want to see something?"
Sparky picked up a forgotten baseball in his teeth. With a flick of his head, the ball sailed through the air—but it didn't just fly. It left behind a trail of rainbow sparkles that smelled like cotton candy.
"Want to play catch?" Sparky asked.
Leo grinned. For the first time, he didn't think about his orange hair.
They played until sunset. Other kids gathered to watch the magical game. No one laughed. No one pointed. They were too busy watching Sparky throw baseballs that turned into butterflies mid-air.
"That's Leo," said a girl named Maya. "He's friends with the magical dog."
Another kid, Sam, picked up a glove. "Can I play too?"
Soon, a whole game started. Leo's hair caught the golden sunlight, and someone said, "Hey, it looks like sunshine! That's cool."
When the game ended, Maya and Sam sat beside Leo. "Want to come back tomorrow?" Maya asked. "You're really fun."
Leo beamed. "I'll be here. With Sparky."
As the stars appeared, Sparky whispered to Leo: "See? Your hair isn't strange. It's magical—just like you."
That night, Leo touched his orange hair and smiled. Being different wasn't bad. It just meant he had his own kind of magic. And now he had friends who could see it too.
