The Dog Who Swam Through Stars
Penny had the wildest orange hair in the whole world. It stuck out in every direction, like fireworks that never stopped exploding. Her mother tried to tame it with ribbons and barrettes, but Penny's hair had a mind of its own.
One hot afternoon, Penny and her dog Barnaby were sitting by the creek. Barnaby was old and scruffy, with fur the color of storm clouds. He splashed his paw in the water, then sneezed.
"I wish you could swim with me," Penny sighed, pulling on her swimsuit.
Barnaby woofed softly and tapped his paw against an orange pebble that glimmered in the sunlight. Suddenly, the creek began to bubble—not with water, but with tiny orange stars that floated upward like reverse snowflakes.
Penny gasped as one star touched Barnaby's nose. His gray fur turned brilliant orange! He paddled his paws and—impossibly—began swimming through the air, as if the whole world had become water.
"Wait for me!" Penny cried. Her orange hair crackled with magic, lifting her off the ground. Together, girl and dog went swimming through the sky, past surprised birds and astonished clouds.
They discovered a hidden kingdom where everything was made of orange light. The Star Queen welcomed them, explaining that only someone with hair as wild and free as Penny's could find this place—and only a dog with a heart as loyal as Barnaby's could enter.
"You've shown us something wonderful," the Queen said. "True friendship lets you swim anywhere, even through stars."
That night, Barnaby's fur returned to gray, and Penny's hair was just hair again. But sometimes, when Penny looked at the stars, she saw them twinkle orange—and she knew that she and Barnaby could go swimming through them whenever they wished, simply by being together.
