The Dog Who Stole My Strikeout
Marcus stood at the plate, baseball bat trembling in his sweaty hands. The entire junior class was watching—well, the important parts of it anyway. Chloe was in the bleachers, probably scrolling TikTok, but still. This was his shot.
"You got this, Marc!" called Jake from the dugout. Marcus's best friend had been saying that for three innings. Marcus had struck out every time. Classic Marcus behavior—overthinking everything until his brain short-circuited.
The pitcher wound up. Marcus's mind went blank. Then—
A dog sprinted onto the field. Not like a cute lost puppy. This was a massive, chaotic beast of a dog, tongue lolling, ears flopping, clearly having the time of its life. It was running straight toward home plate like it had just been invited to the party.
"What the—" the pitcher started, but the dog didn't care. It snatched the ball mid-pitch and took off toward the outfield, tail wagging like it had just won the lottery.
Everyone stared. Then someone laughed. Then everyone was laughing. Even Chloe.
The dog's owner, some sophomore Marcus didn't recognize, came running onto the field. "Buster! Oh my god, I'm so sorry!"
Marcus lowered his bat. The pressure evaporated. This was easily the most embarrassing moment of his life, but somehow... it wasn't terrible. The absurdity of it all broke the tension that had been crushing his chest all afternoon.
"That dog literally just saved you from striking out again," Jake called, grinning.
"Shut up," Marcus said, but he was smiling too.
The game resumed after the drama, but nobody really cared about the score anymore. Marcus ended up getting a walk—not a hit, but he'd take it. Afterward, Chloe actually came over to talk.
"That was legendary," she said. "Your dog?"
"I wish." Marcus shrugged. "But honestly? Best interruption ever."
"For real." She smiled. "Hey, some of us are going to the diner later. You should come. Bring your friend with the terrible swing."
Marcus walked home with Jake, baseball gear slung over his shoulder, feeling lighter than he had in weeks. Sometimes the universe sent you exactly what you needed—even if it came in the form of a chaotic, baseball-stealing dog named Buster.
