The Dog Who Saved Summer

Maya's thumbs hovered over her iPhone screen, caption half-written. #BestSummerEver felt so fake when she was literally hiding behind the snack table at Jake's pool party. She didn't even know why she'd come. Her only real friend here was already flirting with someone else by the diving board.

Then it happened — her charging cable snagged on someone's bag, yanking her phone right out of her pocket. Time moved in awful slow motion as the iPhone arced through the air, aiming straight for the deep end.

"NO!" Maya screamed, but she was too late.

SPLASH.

Her phone. Her LIFE. Gone in three feet of chlorinated water. Maya felt the tears coming, hot and humiliating. Everyone was staring. This was it. Peak loser energy.

But suddenly something went flying past her — a golden blur, executing the most chaotic cannonball in history. Barnaby, Jake's ridiculously oversized golden retriever, launched himself into the pool with zero hesitation. Water everywhere. People screaming and laughing.

The dog surfaced, iPhone clamped gently in his mouth like it was the most precious treasure in the universe. He paddled to the edge, climbed out dripping wet, and dropped the phone directly at Maya's feet.

"BARNABY!" Jake yelled, but he was laughing. "Dude, your phone is a hero magnet."

A girl Maya didn't know — the one who'd been quiet all afternoon — handed her a towel. "That was literally the most awesome thing I've ever seen. Your phone is legendary now."

"Legendary," Maya echoed, drying off her miraculously saved iPhone. "Right. Because a dog fished it out of a pool."

"Exactly," the girl said. "I'm Sarah, by the way. And I think we're going to be friends."

Later, as they sat on the deck chairs watching Barnaby shake water all over everyone, Maya typed out a new caption. Deleted #BestSummerEver and wrote: #DogSavedMyPhone #NewFriend #ActuallyUnforgettable

Some nights are disasters. Sometimes your phone nearly drowns and a dog becomes your hero. And sometimes, just sometimes, that's exactly how you find your people.
