The Dog Who Saved Me
My life was basically one long exercise in being invisible. Until I decided to become a **spy**.
Okay, not actually a spy. But when I found out Tyler was volunteering at the animal shelter on Saturdays, I may have started showing up there "just to look around." For three weeks straight. Totally normal behavior.
The fourth Saturday, everything went sideways. I was crouched behind a stack of dog food bags, supposedly admiring the ingredients list (fascinating stuff), when Buster—the shelter's most chaotic **dog**—spotted me. Buster was part golden retriever, part tornado, and he decided I was his new best friend.
"Hey!" I heard Tyler's voice behind me. "Buster, come back!"
I turned and basically fell over my own feet. Buster was already **running** circles around me, tail wagging like his life depended on it. Tyler was laughing, and I was dying inside.
"You've been here every Saturday," he said, looking at me with those annoyingly perfect eyes. "You really like animals, huh?"
"I'm researching," I blurted. "For school. A project about... animal shelter dynamics?"
Smooth. Really smooth.
Then Buster did the unthinkable. He shook himself vigorously near the water bowl, sending a wave of cold **water** directly into my face. I sputtered, totally soaked, while Tyler lost it completely.
"That's his signature move," he said, handing me a towel. "Buster the Bath Cannon."
We sat there while I drip-dried, talking about everything and nothing. Tyler didn't mock my terrible excuse. He told me about his anxiety, how volunteering helped. I admitted I'd been coming just to see him.
"I knew," he said, grinning. "I was waiting for you to actually say something."
Buster curled up between us, completely proud of himself. Sometimes the most embarrassing moments become the ones that change everything. And sometimes, all you need is a chaotic dog to ruin your spy game and help you find your courage.
