The Dog Who Ruined Everything (Then Fixed It)
Marcus stood at home plate, baseball bat resting on his shoulder, trying to look like he knew what he was doing. The varsity team watched from the dugout – top of the school pyramid, the kids who actually mattered. And somewhere among them was Jessica, prettiest junior in the grade, the reason Marcus had shown up to tryouts at all.
"Batter up!" the coach yelled.
Marcus's heart hammered. He'd practiced his swing for weeks, but nothing could prepare him for what happened next.
A dog – his dad's ancient, smelly pug, Pickles – came charging onto the field, barking like he owned the place. Pickles was supposed to be locked in the car. Somehow, someway, the creature had escaped.
"Whose dog is that?!" Jessica yelled, but she was laughing. Thank god, she was laughing.
"That's mine!" Marcus shouted, abandoning his bat to chase the pug. He tripped over home plate, faceplanted in the dirt, and watched Pickles streak toward the parking lot.
The whole baseball team erupted. Not mean laughter, just – genuine laughter. Marcus rolled over, spitting dirt, grinning like an idiot. What else could he do?
After practice, the team invited him to the town fair. "Anyone who humiliates themselves that hard is one of us," the captain said.
That night, surrounded by his new friends, Marcus rode the mechanical bull while Jessica cheered from the sidelines. Pickles slept in the passenger seat of his car, looking innocent. Sometimes, Marcus thought as the bull bucked him wildly, the worst moments became the best ones. Just like that, he'd climbed the pyramid – not by being cool, but by being exactly who he was: the guy with the chaotic dog and the ability to laugh at himself.
