The Dog Who Puzzled the Sphinx

Barnaby was a small golden dog with floppy ears and a very big nose for adventure. Every morning, he would trot through the sunny streets of his village, sniffing out new friends and interesting smells. But his favorite spot was the old park at the edge of town, where ancient stone paths wound through twisted trees.

One Tuesday, something magical happened. Barnaby was chasing an orange butterfly that flickered like a tiny flame when he noticed something he'd never seen before—a magnificent sphinx sitting beside the park fountain! She had the body of a lion, great golden wings, and the face of a wise woman with sparkling eyes.

"Hello, little one," the sphinx purred, her voice like wind through chimes. "I am Seraphina, and I have been waiting for someone like you."

Barnaby's tail thumped happily. "I'm Barnaby! Do you like orange butterflies? I was chasing—"

"I love butterflies," Seraphina smiled, "but first, you must solve my riddle. What has four legs in the morning, two at noon, and three in the evening?"

Barnaby thought very hard. His nose twitched as he pondered. He circled around Seraphina's stone paws. Then it came to him—his owner's baby sister! "A person!" Barnaby barked excitedly. "They crawl on all fours as a baby, walk on two legs when they grow up, and use a cane when they're old!"

Seraphina's laughter rang like bells. "Correct! You are clever AND kind." From her wing feathers, she produced a perfect orange. "For solving my riddle, you may have this magical fruit. Whoever shares it with a friend will never be lonely."

Barnaby's tail wagged so hard his whole body wiggled. "I know just who needs it! My friend Pip is new in town and has no one to play with!"

And that's how Barnaby the dog, Seraphina the sphinx, and little Pip became best friends—sharing stories, orange slices, and adventures every sunny afternoon. Barnaby learned that the best magic isn't in riddles or flying sphinxes, but in kindness shared with others.
