The Dog Who Loved Papayas
Barnaby was no ordinary dog. He was a scruffy terrier with one floppy ear and a tail that never stopped wagging, but his secret was this: he could talk to magical creatures.
One humid afternoon, Barnaby was swimming in Crystal Creek when he heard a groan from the forest. "Brrraaaaiiins..." The voice sounded sad, not scary.
Barnaby shook water from his fur and followed the sound. There, slumped against a mango tree, sat a pale green figure. "Oh no," whispered Barnaby. "A zombie!"
The zombie looked up with purple eyes. "Not zombie," it mumbled. "Z-z-zoom...bie..." It tried to stand but fell back down, looking exhausted.
Barnaby noticed something glowing in the zombie's pocket—a golden papaya from the enchanted grove. "Is that...?"
"Papaya," the zombie nodded weakly. "For Mama. She sick. I walked three days."
Barnaby's heart melted. This wasn't a monster at all. "You're a Zoomie, aren't you? The forest guardians?"
The Zoomie nodded. "But I forgot the magic words to open the protection spell. Without them, the sun drains my energy."
Barnaby thought hard. His grandmother had told him stories. "The words are about friendship!"
He placed his paw on the papaya. "Friendship opens all doors."
CRACK! The papaya split open, spilling golden light that wrapped around the Zoomie like a warm blanket. Green faded to brown, purple eyes sparkled blue, and suddenly a energetic boy stood there, grinning.
"Thank you, Barnaby!" he cheered. "Will you come meet Mama?"
So Barnaby the dog went swimming with his new friend to the hidden village beyond the waterfall. Mama Zoomie made the most delicious papaya pudding, and Barnaby learned that some things that seem scary at first are just friends waiting to be found.
