The Dog Who Learned Padel

padelbulldog

Marcus's first week at Northwood High felt like walking into a party where everyone else knew the secret handshake. His plan seemed solid: ace tryouts for the padel team, secure instant social status, and maybe finally catch Kiara's attention between classes.

The tryout poster promised 'No experience needed!' — a straight-up lie. Marcus stood there holding a borrowed racquet like it was an alien artifact while Brody, the team captain who everyone called 'The Bull' for his impossible serves, demolished opponents twice his size.

'New blood,' Brody said, sauntering over. His eyes locked on Marcus's worn sneakers. 'Let's see what you got, fam.'

The first ball sailed into the fence. The second hit the net. By the third, everyone was pretending not to watch. Marcus's face burned hotter than a jalapeño challenge.

But the real humiliation? His golden retriever Buster had been watching through the chain-link fence the whole time, tail thumping against the metal like a disappointed metronome.

That night, Marcus sat in his backyard, tossing padel balls against the garage wall. Buster chased each one, returning them slobbery but determined. 'At least someone believes in me,' Marcus muttered, scratching behind the dog's ears.

Something weird happened over the next week. Marcus practiced with his unexpected assistant — Buster developed a knack for predicting ball trajectories, barking before Marcus even swung. The dog became his personal hype man, his emotional support animal, his only fanclub.

The second tryout rolled around. Brody smirked from across the court. 'Round two, rookie. Don't embarrass yourself this time.'

Marcus's hands shook. Until he spotted Buster watching through the fence, doing his little celebration spin. This wasn't about popularity anymore. It was about showing up.

The first return connected perfectly. Then another. Brody's eyebrows shot up. The bull whipped a serve past Marcus, but somehow — maybe channeling Buster's chaotic energy — Marcus got his racquet on it. The ball hit the corner line perfectly.

'Since when can you play?' Brody demanded, actually impressed for once.

'Since my dog started giving me lessons,' Marcus shot back.

He didn't make varsity. But he earned JV starter, Kiara asked him about tryouts in homeroom, and Buster got an official team mascot title. Sometimes the coolest moves happen when you stop trying to impress everyone and just play your game — even if your coach is a dog who thinks tennis balls are snacks.
